Sleeping bees in the early morning light

Long weekends for myself means lots of early morning garden time.

It’s my favorite time—the “Golden Hour,” when the light is soft and everything feels cool, quiet, and gentle. We actually had quite a bit of rain over the weekend, which almost never happens in July. It was a welcome change, knocking down some of the dust and pollen for a day or two.

The garden is my happy place right now.

Everything is in bloom now, and the bees are everywhere, dancing among the flowering plants.

I was able to cut some herbs—though they seem a little late this year—to hang and dry. I usually dry a lot for tea, cooking, and dyeing. I’m not sure how ambitious I’ll get this season; I don’t have any big plans, and I do love seeing everything in flower.

Still, I bundled a few things for myself. I cut lots of lavender for a family member and gathered assorted herbs for a co-worker to dry herself.

I had a moment—on my hands and knees, battling my nemesis, the native grass (it’s strong and sneaky)—when I actually felt proud of myself.

That doesn’t happen very often, if at all. There was no garden here before I arrived. I started all of these plants and do all of the work myself. No one ever sees it. But I know the bees, birds, and critters enjoy it. That’s enough.

The rugs came off the loom this weekend. I’m putting a new warp on and cleaning up—yes, even under the loom. The Tempo Treadle should be shipping soon. I also have some lace scarves on my other loom that I’ll be finishing up next week. I’ll share more later.

Fun fact that Bees sleep between 5 to 8 hours a day, sometimes in flowers. Also, they like to sleep with other bees and hold each other’s feet. Love this!
